Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is a volunteer network of Anabaptist churches that responds in Christian love to those affected by disasters in Canada and the United States. While the main focus is on clean up, repair and rebuilding homes, this service touches lives and nurtures hope, faith and wholeness. Our programs, funded by contributions, aim to assist the most vulnerable community members, individuals and families who, without assistance, would not have the means to recover. MDS volunteers — women and men, youth and adults — provide the skills and labor needed to respond, rebuild and restore.

The West Coast Mennonite Men's Chorus has chosen to support the MDS efforts to rebuild homes destroyed by the recent horrendous fires in California, especially in Lake County.

The links below illustrate the work of MDS as they deliver the message of Christ in a very practical way to families devastated by fire and flood in California and throughout the United States.

2020 MDS Purpose and Outreach

MDS IS THERE TO HELP RESTORE HOMES DESTROYED BY CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

How can MDS help?

MDS works in partnership with faith-based organizations, local recovery groups, and governmental and non-governmental agencies that provide funds for building materials.

MDS expects homeowners to first use personal resources, such as disaster grants and insurance proceeds for purchasing building materials, before donor funds are used.

MDS sometimes provides funds for building materials as resources are available.

Information gathered from each case will help determine whether the homeowner is need of assistance and what is needed.

Working with communities

MDS believes that individuals and communities are key to their own recovery.

MDS seeks to empower local leaders to make long-term recovery decisions.

MDS works directly with homeowners as our volunteers repair and rebuild their homes.

Within a community, a local long-term recovery group is very important. MDS looks to these groups, as well as other partner agencies, for proper case management and prioritization of the community's needs. This collaboration is critical to the success of MDS projects.
